In March 1991, Pittsburgh Pirates signed him as an undrafted free agent. He made his debut on April 29, 1995, against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Pirates traded him to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Warren Morris and Todd Van Poppel and spent the next two seasons with Texas. After that, the Rangers traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays for Darwin Cubillan and Michael Young.
In 2003, he joined the Chicago White Sox as a free agent and played numerous matches. In 2004, he was elected to the All-Star game. Soon he was traded to the New York Yankees. Similarly, in the same, year the Washington Nationals signed him for a one-year deal as a free agent and played for a year. Thereafter, he went to play for the Oakland Athletics from 2006 to 2007. Later in the year 2008, he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox.
