He was born on August 1, 1992, in Santa Monica, California, USA. He is the son of the head coach of Los Angeles Clippers, Doc Rivers, and his mother Kristen Rivers. Austin grew up with his three siblings, Callie, Jeremiah, and Spencer. He belongs to African-American heritage and his star sign is Leo.

His career began when he became one of the top-rated high school basketball players in the class of 2011. Rivals.com rated him No. 1 player. In 2010, he began playing for Dule University and gained further recognition after making a heroic game-winning 3-pointer against Duke rivals North Carolina in 2012.
His professional began when New Orleans Hornets selected him in the 2012 NBA draft. He gave his debut on October 21, 2012, in the Hornets’ season opener opposite to the San Antonio Spurs. There, he scored seven points on 1-of-9 shootings. He then played for the team till 2015 when he was traded to the Boston Celtics. He joined his father on the Los Angeles Clippers three days after. On January 16, 2015, he became the first NBA player to play for his father Doc Rivers.
After playing with the Clippers for three years, in June 2018, he was traded to the Wizards. In December 2018, he then joined Houston Rockets. After two years, he was acquired by the New York Knicks. The following year, he joined Oklahoma City Thunder. Moreover, the same year on April 20, 2021, he joined Denver Nuggets on a 10-day contract. After that, they signed him for the rest of the season.
