She was born on 13 November 1955, in New York City, New York, USA. She is the daughter of a Baptist clergyman father Robert James Johnson Jr. and a nurse and teacher mother Emma Johnson. Whoopi grew up with her brother Clyde. She belongs to the African-American heritage and holds American citizenship.

Whoopi Goldberg began her career on stage with her one-woman show, Spook Show, which later transferred to Broadway under the title Whoopi Goldberg from 1984 to 1985. Her movie breakthrough came from the 1985 film The Color Purple and won Golden Globe Award for her role. Likewise, from the movie Sister Act in 1992 and its sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habitat in 1993, she became the highest-paid actress of the time.

The famous actress, Whoopi Goldberg has been married thrice. However, none of those marriages turned out to be as successful as her career. First, she tied her knots with Alvin Martin in 1973. The pair has a daughter Alex martin. Unfortunately, six years after living as a married couple, they separated and went on with their own separate lives.
After the divorce, she tied her knots with cinematographer David Claessen on September 1, 1986. Their marriage turned out to be very short-lived separating just after two years of marriage in 1988. They did not have any children from their wedding. For the third time, she wedded the union organizer Lyle Trachtenberg.
