Geena Davis is an American actress and activist who has received many accolades for her acting. She is famous for her depiction of strong and authentic female roles.
Early Life and Education:
Virginia Elizabeth Davis, widely known as Geena Davis was born on January 21, 1956, in Wareham, Massachusetts, USA. Her father, William F. Davis was a civil engineer and a church deacon, and her mother, Lucille Cook was a teacher’s assistant. She has an older brother Danforth. She showed her interest in music at an early age and learned to play piano, flute, and organ. As a teenager, she served as an organist at her church in Wareham.
Regarding her academics, she attended Wareham High School and was an exchange student in Sandviken, Sweden. Furthermore, she attended New England College and finally graduated from Boston University in 1979. She has a bachelor’s degree in drama. After her education, she worked for Ann Taylor as one of her window mannequins. Soon after, she was signed by New York’s Zoli modeling agency.
Geena Davis’ Professional Career:
Davis made her acting debut in the movie Tootsie in 1986. In 1986, she starred in the movie The Fly which came out to be her first box office hits. She gained wider recognition after her depiction in the fantasy comedy Beetlejuice in 1988, and the drama The Accidental Tourist in 1998 gained her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Furthermore, she gained another Academy Award nomination for her role in Thelma & Louise in 1991 and a Golden Globe nomination for A League of Their Own in 1992. Though her roles in Cutthroat Island in 1995 and The Long Kiss Goodnight in 1996 became a downturn in her career. Her career again took an uprise when she appeared in the Stuart Little franchise portraying an adoptive mother from 1999 to 2005.
In the TV series Commander in Chief, her role as the first female president of the U.S. won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama. Her other films include Accidents Happen in 2009, Marjorie Prime in 2017, a recurring role in the TV series Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Nicole Herman, The Exorcist in 2017, and more.
