Renny Harlin is a Finnish film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is the most successful Finnish director in the history of the Hollywood Industry.
Early Life and Education:
He was born on March 15, 1959, in Riihimaki, Finland. His father Oiva Harjola, a chief physician, and his mother Liisa Koskiluoma, a nurse. He was raised along with his two siblings, Veli-Pekka Harjola and Tuire Harjola. Though, there is not much information regarding his childhood life. His star sign is Pisces and holds a Finnish nationality.
Talking about his academic qualifications, there are no details about his educational background. However, like most Finnish, he might be a high school graduate. It is unknown if he has attended or graduated college.
Renny Harlin’s Professional Career:
Harlin began his career in the film industry at the beginning of the ’80s. He started by directing commercials and company movies for companies like Shell. In 1982, he met Markus Selin and became friends shortly after. Together they wrote a screenplay called “Arctic Heat”, which later named Born American. In 1986, Born American turned out to be the most expensive Finnish film ever opening in over 1,000 theaters in the U.S.
He relocated to Los Angeles and started directing many movies. His direction in the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988 turned out to be his breakthrough point. Furthermore, Harlin’s other successful films include The Adventures of Ford Fairlane in 1990, Die Hard 2 in 1990, Cliffhanger in 1993, The Long Kiss Goodnight in 1996, Deep Blue Sea in 1999, and many more.
His movies have earned a total of $525,410,873 in the U.S. and $1,160,546,146 worldwide as of October 2016. He is the 115th highest-grossing director in the worldwide film market. However, his movie Cutthroat Island holds the title of the “Biggest Box-Office Flop of All Time” according to the Guinness world record.
